The Hummingbird Story
One day a terrible fire broke out in a forest – a huge woodland was suddenly engulfed by a raging wild fire. Frightened, all the animals fled their home and ran out of the forest. As they came to the edge of a stream they stopped to watch the fire and they were feeling very discouraged and powerless. They were all bemoaning the destruction of their home. Everyone of them thought there was nothing they could do about the fire, EXCEPT for one little hummingbird!
This particular hummingbird decided it would do something. It swooped into the stream and picked up a few drops of water and went into the forest and put them on the fire. Then it went back to the stream and did it again, and it kept going back, again and again and again. All the other animals watched in disbelief; some tried to discourage the hummingbird with comments like, “Don’t bother, it is too much! You are too little! Your wings would burn! Your beak is too tiny! It’s only a drop! You can’t put out this fire.”
And as the animals stood around disparaging the little bird’s efforts, the bird noticed how hopeless and forlorn they looked. Then one of the animals shouted out and challenged the hummingbird in a mocking voice, “What do you think you are doing?” And the hummingbird, without wasting time or losing a beat, looked back and said, “I’m doing what I can.”
Inspired by the hummingbird, we are doing what we can to mild if not stop the process of climate change. It has become the biggest threat in our time and the times coming. Our actions have a great deal of impact towards what will happen tomorrow. Hence we believe that this great turning that we are in, is about preserving nature to sustain ourselves.
Great Circle Tribe is a community that creates sustainable Eco Projects around the world. Our aim is to reconnect people with nature, combining together culture, science and art. Learning by doing is our spirit. It is open to anybody who has common dreams.
Our Eco Farm Concept
Our Eco Farm focus on community building. We want to create places around the world that will allow people to live ecologically. Places where people could produce their own healthy organic food, support local products and services, create crafts, gather, share and celebrate life. At the moment, this way of life seems like an alternative living. We hope that one day more people are able to live this way and it would become the norm, while profiting for own benefits would become the alternative.
We design our Eco Farm based on Permaculture principles – Earth Care, People Care and Fair Share. The methods includes:
- Observe/interact – Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
- Catch and store energy – Solar, Biomass, Wind, Hydro, Biogas
- Obtain a yield
- Apply self regulation and accept feedback
- Use and value natural resources and services
- Produce no waste – Refuse, Reduce, Repair, Reuse, Recycle
- Design from patterns to detail
- Integrate rather than segregate
- Use and value small and slow solutions
- Use and value diversity
- Use and value edge and the marginal
- Creatively use and respond to change
